Hunt and Craft in Rise of the Tomb Raider

Crystal Dynamic’s Rise of the Tomb Raider, upcoming sequel to their successful Tomb Raider reboot, releases late 2015 for the Xbox One and Xbox 360. The studio has been tight-lipped since last year’s E3 reveal but we’re finally getting some details via the latest GameInformer cover story.

After her supernatural encounters in the previous game, Lara now sets off for Siberia in search of a 13th-century hidden city built by the Grand Prince of Vladimir, supposedly holding the secrets to immortality. With the cold landscape prone to fog and other weather changes, expect line of sight and hearing to affect both you and your enemies.

Her bow will now be a lot busier too, as the hunting mechanics have been expanded. They’re improving how animals react to the player and climate, as well as adding day-night activity cycles. In short, if you really want that rare bone or hide you’re going to have to actually track down the animal.

To help put those scavenged materials to use, they’ve implemented a proper crafting system this time around. We’ll get to make traps and poisons in addition to crafting staples like recovery items and Molotov cocktails, which should allow for more diverse playstyles.

GameInformer has a digital subscription if you’d like to read more of it.

While Rise of the Tomb Raider is confirmed for Microsoft’s consoles, the studio says they’re open to the possibility of releasing for other platforms, meaning this could very well be a timed exclusive.
