Demon Hunters… In Singapore?

If you’re of the school of thought that Singapore doesn’t have any cosplaying talent, it may be time for you to eat your words.

Three local cosplays were recently featured on Kotaku’s weekly ‘Fancy Pants’ roundup: male and female Demon Hunters from Diablo III as well as a rendition of Yuna from Final Fantasy X-2.

We managed to track down the two Demon Hunters from the Neo Tokyo Project to find out more about them.

30 year old Jason ‘Crimson’ Koh and 27 year old Joey ‘Angelus’ Lim are both a couple and cosplay partners, and while their names might not be too familiar, their faces certainly are!

They’re the famous World of Warcraft mage and ‘lock couple we’ve been seeing at gaming events for the past couple of years.

“We’ve been dating for close to a decade, but we didn’t really think about cosplaying together until Crimson and I decided to do characters from World of Warcraft for COSMO in 2010,” Joey explained. And it looks like the Demon Hunter costumes have replaced their WoW outfits. Like the latter costumes, their Demon Hunter getups will be worn for at least six months to a year. Jason and Joey are likely to wear them to the Singapore Toy, Game and Comic Convention for the cosplay runway, and they might give the outfits their swansongs at the Anime Festival Asia in November.

Their plans to cosplay Demon Hunters together started last year around late October, when the official trailer for Diablo III’s Demon Hunter class was released.

“We started drafting plans in November, but it wasn’t until mid-March that we began seriously working on the project,” said Jason.

It took the couple three weeks to craft both suits from a mix of blue foam, craft foam, pleather and leather, and an extra week or so to paint and detail the outfits. About S$100 was spent per costume.

“The hardest part about making the costumes this time round was actually picking a reference that worked,” Jason explained. They ended up referring to concept art; fortunately, things went smoothly from there.

Not surprisingly, Jason and Joey chose to cosplay Demon Hunters because it is their class of choice in Diablo III. This was also the same reason why they have been a mage and a warlock before – Jason mains a warlock in World of Warcraft, while Joey has a mage as her alt.

“I would have cosplayed a Tauren shaman,” she said, “but I don’t think I’d look very cute in a fursuit.” We concur.

Apart from their iconic Blizzard cosplays, Jason and Joey also have numerous other costumes. Joey’s a big comic book fan and gets other inspirations there as well, while Jason’s wardrobe is mainly filled with costumes from the WoW universe.

You can soon expect to see them in tandem appearances once again, as they have plans to showcase a Deathwing and Alexstrasza cosplay at a convention soon. The couple enjoy cosplaying together, with Jason feeling that their closeness helps when working on costumes and performances together. They also have a Oswald and Gwendolyn Odin Sphere cosplay planned for Christmas this year.

“Cosplaying as a couple… means we don’t have to worry about being lonely or looking out of place at a convention. We’re always there for each other, and watching each others’ backs,” Joey told us just before leaving.
