AMD’s highly-anticipated Vega GPU is here as the Frontier Edition form

Today is the day Vega properly launches…for the professionals, anyways. Not quite the gamer-targeted Radeon RX Vega, the Vega Frontier Edition is now available for purchase for a low (relatively speaking) price of US$999.

Based on the AMD Vega GPU architecture, the flagship Radeon RX Vega (and by extension, the Vega Frontier Edition too) is the card that AMD promised to finally compete with the very top-end of NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 10-series GPUs.

While the RX 480 and RX 470 have shown impressive DirectX 12 performance against the mid-range GeForce-shaped competition, AMD have yet to release a high-end card to give them genuine 4K gaming. Hence the high anticipation for the RX Vega amongst gamers and PC enthusiasts.

The Radeon Vega Frontier Edition is targeted at the likes of data scientists, game designers and visualization professionals, and is set to give its nearest competitor, the NVIDIA Titan Xp a run for its money. But sure, there’s no stopping you from using it for your 4K runs in Battlefield 1 or Mass Effect: Andromeda.

In the meantime, it’s the air-cooled version of the Vega Frontier Edition that is going on sale first. However, Singapore-based customers will have to pre-order it from e-tailers. The liquid-chilled Frontier Edition isn’t coming until Q3 of this year. It’s only a couple of months to Q3 now, but probably just barely enough time for you to save up for its US$1,499 price tag. Yup.
