Overview: Indonesia Fighting Game Championships 2013

The Indonesia Fighting Game Championships 2013, the country’s first Road to EVO event, concluded over the weekend at Binus University, Jakarta, Indonesia. Held in conjunction with the university’s Natsu Matsuri celebration – CosUta Matsuri – the IFGC had a total of 155 participants.
The number of players was but a small drop amidst the backdrop of the CosUta Matsuri, but gamers and cosplayers alike mingled and spectated each others’ events, contributing to the success for both. The Japanese culture and anime con even had its own side tournament for Touhou Project, though the hype that generated was completely drowned out by the Puzzle Fighter exhibition match in the IFGC, where Indonesian female player Katalyss beat team Singapore in an OCV.
Sponsored by GS Shop, Indonesia’s largest videogame chain store, and media outlet Video Games Indonesia, the Indonesia Fighting Game Championships saw invited guests DM MCZ Xian, DM MCZ Zhi, and DM MCZ Sonic from Singapore battling it out with the Indonesian fighting game community for EVO seed points, sick trophies, and a prize pot numbering into the millions (in IDR, anyway). Players from Malaysia and Taiwan also flew in for a chance at winning the IFGC.

This is the second year the Indonesia Fighting Game Championships have been held.
“We wanted to make something different so we can grow the community,” said Bram Arman, from the IFGC organising committee. Bringing Desperation Move-Mad Catz’s Xian and Zhi over was a natural choice – Singapore is not far from Indonesia, and the presence of a world-class player would bring exposure to Indonesia’s cream of the fighting game crop.
Indonesia intends to send a contingent to EVO 2k13 this year.
