Nintendo is releasing a Super Nintendo Classic!

If you did not managed to get your hands on a Nintendo NES Classic, which is now quite impossible to get without forking out a ridiculous black-market price, fret not! There’s the even better Super Nintendo (SNES) Classic coming this 29th September in the US.

We first reported the rumour about Nintendo’s plan to release a classic version of the SNES, after the success of the NES Classic, and it looks like our wish have been granted.

Available for US$80, the SNES will come with 21 games – a drop from the 30 in the NES Classic. But before you frown, just check out the line-up below. These are mostly excellent titles, including Earth Bound, Final Fantasy III (which many consider to be the best in the series), A Link to the Past and even the previously unreleased Star Fox 2!

  • Contra III: The Alien Wars
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • EarthBound
  • Final Fantasy III
  • F-ZERO
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Kirby’s Dream Course
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Mega Man X
  • Secret of Mana
  • Star Fox
  • Star Fox 2
  • Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Metroid
  • Super Punch-Out!!

Speaking of Star Fox 2, according to the Nintendo press release, you will have to beat the first level of the original Star Fox first, before the game unlocks. The SNES will come with a HDMI cable, and two matching SNES controllers this time.

We have reached out to Maxsoft, the local distributor for Nintendo, on the SNES availability and pricing and will update here accordingly. Meanwhile, be prepared to go to ‘war’ at your local retailer or on Lazada when the SNES Classic does ship here.

(Update: Europe gets the superior Super Famicom Classic)
