Total War’s next big game is based on the Three Kingdoms
Consider this the first big surprise of 2018. Total War‘s next game will be based on one of China’s most popular time period; the Three Kingdoms.
Despite two excellent Total War: Warhammer games in recent years, and with another Saga game announced earlier this week, the series’ last historical game was Total War: Rome II back in 2013. That’s a pretty long time!
Except for the very cool introduction video below, not much is known about Total War: Three Kingdoms except it will be out this Fall. The game also looks like it will feature hero units, much in the same way Warhammer did. Three Kingdoms aficionados should instantly recognise some of these heroes in the video, such as Dong Zhuo, Lu Bu, Yuan Shao and the famous trio of Liu Bei, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu.
It’s also likely the game will follow the romanticized version of events and characters based on the Chinese Classic, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, rather than the widely regarded official and authoritative historical text “Records of the Three Kingdoms“ by the historian Chen Shou.
The Three Kingdoms have always fascinated many Asians, including myself, and is seeped deep in Asian pop culture – spawning an anime, manga, an epic Chinese drama series and of course video games such as the Dynasty Warriors franchise. And who can forget Koei’s “one more turn” Romance of the Three Kingdoms strategy games?
